Unpopular opinion tiem! Here we go:
I strongly believe that many people injure themselves for attention, even if it’s a desperate cry for help. That isn’t to say that they’re not genuinely suffering. But jeez, if you’re gonna shred up your forearm and start uncharacteristically wearing short sleeves afterward, yes, it’s probably for attention.
People can cut for manipulation and control over others as well. I’ve several times heard people say things like, “If you break up with me or do this or that, I’ll cut myself.” People can even cut for fashion, or to fit in. It can be done purely for aesthetics, though I recognize that scarification is a different concept.
There are some people, like you say, who self-injure because they are simply trying to escape their own minds, or other such reasons. But people injure themselves for so many different reasons. How can we generalize?
I do, however, agree that it’s stupid to get into a competition about whose scars are worse and other such nonsense. That’s not the issue here.
